What Goods Receipts Need
Itemized Products
Each product on its own line with description, SKU/model number, quantity, and unit price. Buyer reconciles in seconds.
Per-Line Sales Tax
Apply different tax treatment to taxable vs exempt items on the same receipt. Resale certificates and exemption codes referenced.
Return Policy Disclosure
Notes section displays the return / exchange policy at point of sale, meets state-disclosure requirements where applicable.
Shipping & Handling
Separate shipping line with correct tax treatment per destination state. Avoids bundling shipping into goods price, which complicates tax filing.

Sale of Goods Receipt FAQ
Why itemized goods receipts matter more after Wayfair
The 2018 Supreme Court Wayfair decision changed sales-tax obligations dramatically for goods sellers. Previously, a seller had to collect sales tax only in states where they had a physical presence; after Wayfair, every state can impose collection obligations on out-of-state sellers who exceed economic-nexus thresholds (typically $100,000 in sales or 200 transactions per year). Most states adopted these thresholds within 2-3 years; many have since adjusted them. Online and multi-state sellers now have to track tax obligations in dozens of states.
Itemized goods receipts are the documentation backbone for Wayfair compliance. Each transaction's destination state determines tax rate; each item's category (general merchandise, food, clothing, prescription drugs) determines whether it's taxable or exempt. Vague "merchandise: $X" receipts can't support state-by-state filing; itemized receipts can. The few seconds to itemize properly translate into hours saved at quarterly tax filing.
