Prominent placement (top or bottom of receipt, not buried in footer fine print) is both regulatory best practice and good customer experience.

The receipt should be detailed enough to support the LMN — show the gym's name, the member's name, the period covered, and the amount.

The opaque version — 'Membership: $400' on a date that doesn't match the standard renewal cycle — invites questions and chargebacks because the customer can't verify the math against their own records.

Can membership receipts substantiate tax deductions?

It depends on the membership type. Professional association memberships are deductible as a business expense if related to the member's trade or profession (Schedule C for self-employed, Schedule A miscellaneous for employees pre-2018; mostly removed for employees post-TCJA). Charitable organization memberships are partially deductible — only the amount that exceeds the fair market value of any benefits received counts. Country club, gym, and recreational club memberships are generally NOT deductible. Receipts substantiating any deduction should clearly identify the type of membership and the period covered.

What if a member cancels and asks for a refund?
